Post-football: exploring dynamics of affect, connection and belonging in the era of neoliberal football
Nuno Domingos, Carolina Cardoso & Ruy Blanes

Contemporary football is dominated by processes of neoliberalization and increasing commercialization, and the subsequent transformations of supporters into consumers, boosted by increasing possibilities of mobility and access to club events and products. This marks a distinct rupture from more ‘traditional’ histories of fandom and supporting, marked by diverse forms of territorialization (national, ethnic, etc.). While this idea of ‘industrialization’ is recognizeable at a certain level of football experience in the last decades, it certainly does not exhaust the diversity of experiences and logics of identification between football clubs and their publics. In fact, it generates new ideologies of distinction between e.g. ‘modern' or 'anti-modern' grassroots and mainstream, ‘real’ or ‘fake’ connections to football. From the perspective of the anthropology of football, to what extent does this reflect a ‘post-‘ moment, in the sense of generating a space of critique and reflexivity in terms of debating what it means to be a ‘football fan’. In this special issue we explore, through empirically-based case studies within and beyond the so-called neoliberal era, the dimensions of affect, connection and senses of belonging that are currently defining the football experience.

Possible contributions for this special issue could approach, for instance:

- Emerging forms of fandom and connection in the neoliberal era: from club collectionism to betting-supported engagement.
- New forms of violence and conflict in contemporary football.
- Dynamics of fan and practitioner mobilization in amateur and semi-professional football.
- Beyond the Champions League: exploring new and alternative territories of mobilization and experience.

We particularly welcome contributions focusing on the case of Scandinavia.
